Thorr's Hammer

Dommedagsnatt (Southern Lord Recordings)

Just by glancing at the title of this release, you can guess that the lyrics are not in English. Rather Norwegian. Vocalist Runhild Gammelsaeter is a native of Norway, and has joined with this American group during the recording of this album. This is my first experience with a doom band, and I found this album surprising in many ways. It's a 35 minute release composed of only four songs, leaving each song to be almost 10 minutes long. The music is so drawn out and slow, and for the most part repetitive, though an occasional change is thrown in. The guitars/bass is so depressingly evil and ritualistic. Runhild's vocals give Thorr's Hammer a quite unique sound, a mix between her deep growl and her alto overdubbed singing. Though I am not a big fan of this style, I would recommend Thorr's Hammer to fans of all that is dark and evil, and for anyone interested in starting a cult! -- Lady Enslain
