Enslain Magazine Issue #6
Too many of the greatest thrash bands from the 80s either began conforming to the newer sounds of the 90s, or simply began writing stale riffs and songs, but with less drive, and nothing to hold on to. The same may have been expected of Testament, who have already lasted longer through the 90s than any other thrash band. If anything, they have done the complete opposite of what other bands have done, getting tighter and heavier with age. "The Gathering" is a step between "Demonic" and older Testament, mixing in old thrash elements with a chunky death-like sound, with a lot of vocal variety. Dave Lombardo, James Murphy and Steve Digiorgio add to the mix and help this album stay tight and fresh. Some of the catchier songs include "Do Not Resuscitate" and "True Believer," which hooked me in from first listen. If you've been waiting around for an excellent thrash album, need I flash the word "TESTAMENT" in multi-colored neon letters?
