Monstrosity

In Dark Purity (Conquest Music)
Enslain Magazine Issue #6
Order Issue #6! This review included. The third and by far best release by this legendary Florida Death Metal force. "In Dark Purity" is an album of pure death metal excellence. Vocalist Jason Avery (formerly of Eulogy) fits in perfectly with the band and his voice is a great asset. Lee Harrison just gets better and better on the skins with every album he puts out. His very skillful playing is all over this album with many excellent thrash beats, tasteful blast beats and double bass galore. The guitar riffs on here are heavy as hell and very catchy. I love the double picking on "The Angels Venom". Another stand out track is "The Pillars of Drear" which is a slower track extremely full of dark emotion. Remember that intensely heavy feeling you would get whenever you would hear "Warhead" by Venom? Then you know what I am talking about. The solos on this album are also quite impressive. Then, of corpse, comes the cover of Slayer's "Angel of Death". I have heard many bands cover this track (Slayer's ultimate song, in my opinion) and have made a mockery out of it. Monstrosity is the first to do it right. A perfect ending to this masterpiece of an album. One of 1999s best. Buy now or die pitifully in ignorance. -- Morbid Mario
