Machine Head

The Burning Red (Roadrunner)
Enslain Magazine Issue #6
Order Issue #6! This review included. I've always liked MachineHead ... they were good to listen to when I wanted to invoke anger, and they were tight and driving live. That's why it is so hard for me to write this review. As soon as I heard Robb Flynn rapping, that's when I knew it was only going to go downhill. All the energy and aggression from former releases have turned to a simple, bass-oriented, radio-friendly sound. There isn't a single song on here that retains their identity. I've been listening to "The Burning Red" over and over just so I could find something nice to say about it. Well, the first song (a 1-minute intro to the CD) is actually really atmospheric and calming, very unlike MH, but it's about the only thing on here worth listening to. Well, that and their cover of "Message In A Bottle" which is good for a laugh. Yet another Roadrunner band has fallen victim to "searching for themselves" and "reaching a new audience." In doing so, they have deserted their fans, and their integrity. -- Lady Enslain
