Enslain Magazine Issue #5
Austrian death metallers Darkside offer us an album with a lot of potential for worldwide repute. "Evolution" is slowly played death metal with keyboards. The riffing and drums are creative, yet common sounding. The vocals are a decent slow growl which can often be understood. The keys on this album don't always add atmosphere... they harmonize with the guitars and add depth and melody. There are a few atmospheric songs, "'Till (Y)our Bitter End" for example, which has an almost celestial sound, and "In Silence," which has the sound of a spiritual void. But the heavier, more powerful songs, my favored being "The Gleaming," seem to be more of their sound. There's a lot of diversity here, and it's easy to listen to repeatedly.
